Overview

Bais City is well known as it is located close to the protected marine sanctuary, the Tanon Strait. Travelling to Bais from Dumaguete usually takes around an hour since it is 45 km away from Bais. You will be able to find fascinating sights of dolphins and whales playing in the water.

Dolphin Watching

One of the most famous attractions in Bais City is dolphin watching which allows people to experience dolphins in their natural habitat in the ocean rather than being enclosed in a tank in an aquarium. Due to its interesting combination of activities, it has become quite popular among both foreign and local travellers. The tour begins with a cruise from Bais Bay to Tanon Strait, which is host to a large variety of dolphin and whale species. Some common kinds of dolphins you may spot during the trip are bottlenose dolphins, pantropical spotted dolphins and long snouted spinner dolphins. Many tours have a skilled dolphin spotter who show you when dolphins approach the boat. The tour takes full day, starting at 7 am and ending at 4pm.

After the dolphin watching, there are a number of activities you can indulge in. Head out to Manjuyod White Sand Bar and feast on a scrumptious lunch while relaxing out into the clear blue sky. In addition, this place is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, sun bathing and scuba diving in the closeby reefs.

The Experience

Dolphins are naturally curious creatures so they enjoy swimming around the boat, examining it and playing in the nearby area for up to an hour. The water is clear which makes it easier to view the dolphins. The boat ride is gentle and slow to ensure no harm to dolphins. Some common kinds of dolphins you can expect to spot during the trip are bottlenose dolphins, pantropical spotted dolphins and long snouted spinner dolphins.

Swimming and feeding the dolphins is not allowed even though most people want to do so. Dolphins are wild animals so they can be impulsive regardless of their beauty. Moreover, the dolphins have not been trained to swim with humans so the dolphins could get scared and injure themselves or the swimmer.

Visiting season

This tour is a seasonal tour and the best chances of seeing dolphins is during March to October. Northeast monsoon is common throughout the rest of the year which makes cruising a challenge. The whales do not show up as well due to the high winds and waves.

Travel tips

Before going on the Bais dolphin watching tour, it is preferred that you wear your swimming attire since there are no changing rooms or facilities in the tour site. Also, pack a pair of dry clothes which you can wear on your way back to the city. If you want to protect your gadgets and electronic devices, make sure to bring waterproof phone or camera cases.

Therefore, if you are someone who is looking for a relaxing, pleasant day in the water while being amused by the antics of joyful animals in their natural habitat, dolphin watching in Bais is perfect for you.
